暗 闇 で 手 を 伸 ば すトナカイ (松本 慎一)

カラーネガフィルムを暗室で手焼きするとき、作業は全暗で行われる。手探りで遮光袋から印画紙を取り出し、引き伸ばし機のうえに置き、ほんの数秒、ネガを通過した光を焼き付け、ふたたび手探りで印画紙を掴み、現像液に浸し、１分後、定着液に移す。明かりをつけ、印画紙をひっくり返すと、ようやく像が現れる。それは記憶を呼び出す儀式のようだ。私は過去のネガフィルムに光をかざし、埋もれていた記憶を焼き付けはじめた。暗闇で手を伸ばすように。
"Reaching into the Dark"
When hand-printing color negative film in the darkroom, the work is done in complete darkness. You feel your way into the lightproof bag, draw out a sheet of paper, and place it beneath the enlarger. For just a few seconds, light passes through the negative and burns into the paper. Then, by touch again, you lift the paper, slip it into the developer, and after a minute, move it to the fixer. You switch on the light, turn the paper over, and finally — an image appears.
It feels like a ritual for summoning memory. I began holding my old negatives up to the light again, burning the buried memories back in. Reaching into the dark.
